Tiles of War

I did a roadtrip last year (2018) with friends to visit Little Wars Melbourne. An absolute blast of a trip too and LWM is such a fun day. While I was there I saw a game table for Wings of Glory that seriously blew me away. It was built on a base of interlocking foam rubber floor-mats, with a patchwork quilt of fields, roads, rivers and forests made from foam flock (typically Woodland Scenics, but probably from other companies too). Not sure if it’s appropriate to mention the name of the chap who made the table, but I will say that his skills as a terrain maker far outstrip mine.

Check out these amazing shots…

It wasn’t long after I got home that I bought my first pack of floor tiles, with the intent of recreating this master work for my own use. Needless to say, it took almost a year before I made a start on the project.

I recently joined his Facebook group (Trev’s Workshop) and was pleased to find a tutorial on how he made the table. So I made a start a little while ago.

I bought the floortiles from Bunnings (an Australian hardware chain), although I believe that they can be bought from a number of different places. There are 4 tiles in a pack that assemble into 1 square metre. I bought three packs, aiming to make a 3×2 playing surface covering 1.5m x 1m (the spare two tiles will go towards an ocean mat for playing Cruel Seas).

The first tile is now finished (glue is still drying in places) and I’ve mapped out the remaining 5 tiles. Here’s the first one…
