D&D Challenge Day 19 – Role Play vs Maxing Stats

Day 19 – What’s your favourite playing style – role playing or maxing stats?

Neither, to be honest. Well, I lean towards the Role Play style, but I’m not a great one for inventing a character and sticking to it. I mentioned in an earlier post that I gravitate towards the Rogue group of character classes because they afford [me] the greatest flexibility in game play. So rather than role play a character class, I tend to role play the alignment (chaotic neutral).

As a DM though, I try and reward my players when they do stick to their characters (insert hypocritical emoji here) because I feel they are investing in their character and trying to bring him or her to life.

As the DM, my enjoyment of the game stems from the players telling the story. I will describe the scene to them – what the threats are and where everything is, but they choose how they will react and how they will solve the puzzle laid before them. And if they can keep in-character and choose their actions with that in mind, then the story is developing as a collaborative effort.

Hmmm, maybe I should role play a bit more – it sounds like fun.
