D&D Challenge Day 8 – Favourite Un-played Character

Day 8 – What is the favourite character you haven’t played?

The question is a little open to interpretation. Does it refer to a character I have developed but haven’t used yet? Or is it asking about someone else’s character that I have admired and enjoyed playing alongside?

I would say that both questions are valid and, if you’re thinking of doing your own challenge, then choose your preferred interpretation. I’m going with the former…

I have begun developing the back story for a new character. At this stage I’m not sure if I want her to be my own PC or to be an NPC in my campaign. The story is still under development, but here’s a taste…

Jaylian is a young teenage girl living with her family in the marshlands near Utica (a large township 20 miles to the north of Carthage). Jaylian’s father keeps bees and tends many hives, producing a high quality honey that is prized by the cognoscenti in Carthage and has reportedly been served at the Magister’s table. Her mother makes candles and polishes from the wax and Jalyian’s task are to tend the flowers that they have planted in the marshlands for the bees. Each market day, she takes their cart to Utica to sell their wares; honey, candles and cut flowers.

As she was returning from the market one day and her home came into view, she saw her parents standing by the road arguing with three strangers. These men were tall and strangely dressed. When her father saw Jaylean, he pushed past the men and shouted at her. His words were carried away by the wind, but he was clearly alarmed for her. In the blink of an eye, the strangers drew their swords and slew Jaylian’s parents in front of her.

Horrified, she felt an immense burning anger chuirning inside of her and a roaring sound rose in her ears as she charged wildly at the men. With the deafing roar came a dark cloud that blocked her vision. But it wasn’t inside of her. With sudden clarity, she realised that the hives had emptied and a vast swarm of bees surrounded her. Looking towards the men, she pointed, and the bees surged forwards stinging the men relentlessly until they dropped to the ground in agony. Within minutes they were dead. The swarm rose up into the air and formed the shape of a crescent moon, before dispersing.

Something inside of Jaylian had fractured with her parents’ deaths, but it had also released something else inside her that she had never suspected existed.

So, is she a druid (and a pretty powerful one at that), a vessel for a deity, or was someone (or something) unseen helping her? Who were those men and why were they after her? Should we help Jaylian find her destiny, or she we prevent her from reaching her full potential?
