D&D Challenge Day 3 – Favourite Race

Day 3 – What’s your favourite palyable race?

Human. Probably.

I’ve only been a player on three adventures in the past 40 years. All the other sessions have been as a DM, so my experiences in this regard are limited.

My first character was a gnome, my second was a human (I think, it was a long time ago), and the third was a half-elf. The gnome offered a few interesting possibilities from a role-playing point of view, but was always tainted (and taunted) with the image of a red pointy hat and a fishing pole. The half-elf was a great character and a lot of fun to play (I’ll tell you about him in the next challenge), but his racial background never really came to the fore. He was a half-elf in the company of elves and so he wasn’t particularly remarkable.

In a fantasy setting, there’s a lot of stereotyping (in-game racism?) that goes on – apparently Elves are haughty and love trees, Dwarves are gruff and live in underground halls (what do they eat?), Halflings are jolly fellows that smoke pipes and live on farms (nor do they wear shoes: not a great idea in an agrarian society). I tried to turn that on its head with my half-elf character though – he was living in the poor district of Parsantium, scraping an existence by busking in the market places before he hooked up with a bunch of adventurers. It seemed interesting to me that a person of Elven descent should be living in poverty in a large human city (a wonderful setting, based on Byzantium). If I had stayed with the character and explored it further, then maybe this would be my fave race. Dunno.

Humans though can be anything and everything and have such enormous potential.

I can’t give a definitive answer from a player’s point of view, so I’ll leave it open and come back to it after I’ve had a chance to play again (probably around 2030).
