Day 14 – What is your ‘go-to’ monster (as a DM) or your favourite monster as a player?
Orcs.
Tolkein again. I cannot go past these cruel and vicious warriors. I don’t think of them as the green-skinned tusked creatures of Warhammer and World of Warcraft, but rather the corrupted humanoids (elfoids?) from the Lord of the Rings. Peter Jackson’s take on them was not far off my vision and I love seeing them as the agency of destruction of the human world.
In the D&D-verse, they aren’t a part of the goblin family (that role seems to be filled by the Hobgoblin), but in my campaign they are.
Other monsters you will frequently find in my campaigns are skeleton warriors. I can link this directly to Ray Harryhousen’s astonishingly well done stop-motion sequence in Jason and the Argonauts (the original). And there’s this one picture in the original AD&D DMG that I find really evocative too…
