Day 27 – Where do your adventures usually begin?
In a tavern.
Not really, although I have used that once (it was the Prancing Pony). It’s such a tired old cliche and yet still gets used today (Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, I’m looking at you).
I try to throw the players into the thick of the action, so they are usually travelling somewhere and get waylaid with a quest. I have had them start on a boat that flounders in a storm and they are washed up with little or no equipment on a strange shore. I started them off by being captured by Hobgoblins and forced to escape their cage before the walls of the castle come crashing down on them in an apparent earthquake. And the most recent adventure started with them on the road tracking their missing companion.
And now I am working on developing the story so the players get a base of operations (a boat) and that will be the starting place for future adventures most likely.
